This is a popular Latvian lullaby. A mother and father gather forest fruits and honey for their baby, or 'bear cub'. The left hand is simple in sound but takes some practice technically.

I'm desperate to get out in the garden and get planting a new area. But there's still frost in the forecast, so I have to be patient, and make up little tunes about it instead!

This is the second piece dedicated to Ceri Francis and her pupils. It's a good workout for all the fingers, and has a minimalist feel to it.

Today's piece is the first of two dedicated to Ceri Francis and her students. After a kind donation, Ceri asked for some music to be used for a competition within her music studio. The brief was to write something using pedal, with a melancholy mood and a nature theme. So, here is Winter's Silence.

Today's piece was kindly sponsored by my godmother, Brenda Inglis, for her granddaughter Lilly. Lilly is learning the piano, and may not be quite ready to master the piece this Christmas, but I'm sure she'll be able to tackle it next year if she keeps up the practice! ;-)

The title is, of course, ironic, as there are many, many ties in this piece. It's a good exercise in counting if nothing else!

My first set of Practice Riffs proved popular, so this week I bring you another three sets. Again, I’ve categorised them as Grade 2 but more advanced players would benefit from this kind of workout too.

This piece seems simple enough, but playing two notes at once in the right hand requires quite a bit of technical skill.

Pay careful attention to the right hand phrasing, as it's what gives the piece its character.

The 5/8 time signature adds to the tentative feel of the music. But like ice skating, there's nothing to be afraid of!

The Passepied was a dance popular in France, as far back as the 16th Century. I've modelled mine on a typical 18th century Passepied. Watch out for where the left hand crosses over the right.

Keep the left hand crisp and rhythmical, and watch the fingering in the right, and this little jig will play itself!

Minimalism in music often involves simple, repeated phrases, and can be very relaxing to listen to and to play.

To make this piece easier to read, I've used long note values - which means you have to play it faster! The overall effect will be quite a lazy blues. Perfect for dragging out those last few minutes before bedtime!

Here's another piece for a boy in Ukraine. A famous landmark there is the Potemkin Steps at Odessa. It's a huge flight of steps in ten stages. I imagined climbing them, and having a rest between each stage. The music climbs in a similar fashion, and as it progresses, it gets harder to climb as we run out of breath. But at last we're at the top, and we can turn around and enjoy the view!
