I forgot to feed my Gulump not so long ago. Things got nasty. I'll leave it there.

The left hand is the leader, the right hand is the follower, one bar / measure later. It's not a difficult piece, until you try playing with dynamics, which overlap.

In this piece, keep the right hand light, and let the right hand be the star, with its legato phrases.

Embrace the challenge of these Latin rhythms! The time signature may look scary, but watch the demo video and you'll soon get the hang of it!

My tempo suggestions are just that - suggestions. You could turn this into quite a showy piece by increasing the speed to 140 beats per minute.

A nice little workout for the beginner, including some contrasts of dynamics and articulation.

Here in the UK it has been incredibly hot. I'm not such a fan of heat, so I've been trying to visualise cool situations. Hence the Winter Waltz. Brrr...

No social distancing for your hands here - they will be virtually on top of each other throughout!

Tap into your younger students' imagination with a story they will all know. Talk about how the dynamics represent the building materials, and the loud crashes are the houses being blown down by the nasty wolf!

Pointing out sequences to students, such as bars 9-11 and bars 13 and 14, can help them to learn and understand the music.

This piece is probably nearer Grade 2 than Grade 1, but it has a simple, catchy melody that young folk should latch on to without much difficulty. Older folk are welcome to have a go too!

Only play this piece if you are feeling brave - if the Snufflebug hears it, he may come to call! Watch out for where the left hand crosses over the right.

Enjoy a magical adventure with this somewhat rhapsodic piece!

In music, a 'ground' is a short melodic phrase, repeated throughout a composition, often in the bass. This device was popular in baroque music, but I've added a few modern touches.

I chose this title because the harmonies seem to take you to a different world.

Watch out for the changes of hand position - but it's only up one or two steps and back again.

This piece offers several challenges, including sections where the left hand should be louder than the right, detailed phrasing and staccato, and dynamics. Hopefully it won't give you the hump!

Grade 2
This tender little melody gives the left hand a chance to shine. At times the melody is higher than the right hand, and even in between some of the chords, so the hands have to share the same territory!

An Estampie was a courtly dance, dating from the 12th to 14th centuries, characterised by sliding steps. Look at the phrasing carefully, it makes a huge difference to how the piece sounds, and helps to give it a dance-like feel.

A good piece for working on contrasting staccato and legato. Watch out for the swung quavers, and careful you don't slip up! (Joke...)

Another piece written late at night on a balmy evening. There's a little bit of a French influence in this, I don't know why, perhaps I had been playing some Debussy that day!

Here's a piece for the beginner, using the hand position that most course books begin with. Lots of opportunities to try out some dynamics!

This one is a challenge - I can't pretend I nailed it on the first take! The hands are occupying the same space for most of the piece - excellent practice for tackling Debussy and more modern composers.
