Penguin Dance
Grade 3
I love the way penguins waddle from side to side as they walk. I think as I get older I'm becoming more like a penguin. I've not seen a penguin dance, but I suspect if they heard this piece, they'd try.

The Passepied was a dance popular in France, as far back as the 16th Century. I've modelled mine on a typical 18th century Passepied. Watch out for where the left hand crosses over the right.

This is the fifth offering in my series of ‘Four…’ for beginners. Note the absence of fingering – this is deliberate, to encourage reading of notes not numbers.

This could almost be a little prelude by JS Bach, with a little blues and syncopation thrown in. It's simple but very sweet.

On the face of it this piece doesn't look too difficult. However, I feel it takes an experienced player to bring out the emotion in the music. And the chords need to be balanced very carefully.

The challenge in this piece lies in the central section. There's a melody with long notes to hold, a smooth lower melody also in the right hand, and then a staccato left hand to contend with.

The left hand in this piece has a 'tick tock' feel to it. At bar 9 the rhythms become more syncopated, but the tick tock still emerges to keep us on time.

I'm very fond of this piece, which sounds rather bigheaded! Maybe it's because I'm very fond of the person it's dedicated to. Thank you Ruth for your donation, and remember I expect to hear you play this one day!
